Places

The locations listed in this menu vary in their association with Poe and Whitman. Many are still standing today, while others are just the site of where a structure once was. Some structures have been physically moved from where they were and placed elsewhere to save them from demolition, so where you may find a particular house today is not where it was back in Poe and Whitman’s time (140 Power Street serves as a prime example of that). It is also important to remember that some addresses have changed over time. Whether it be the street, house number, or both the street and house number, buildings have conformed to the changes that have occurred around them.

I have also included two cemeteries in this menu. Swan Point serves as the final resting place of many of Whitman’s friends, while the cemetery itself was visited by Poe and Whitman during their courtship. The North Burial Ground is significant in that it is where you can visit the grave of Whitman and her closest relatives. It is unknown if Poe ever visited the North Burial Ground during his time in Providence.

For the sake of incisiveness, I have only included what I deem the most significant locations in this menu. You can find a complete archive of all the related sites collected on a Google Map that I have created and embedded on the right-hand side of this webpage. Note that the pins are always expanding as I track more locations.
