Albeit loosely tied to Poe and Whitman’s history, Reverence Crocker is worth noting because he was supposed to officiate their wedding on Christmas day in 1848. The wedding was to take place at St. John’s Cathedral, located right in the back of Whitman’s house. Of course the union never came to be, since rumors about Poe’s drinking forced Whitman to call of the wedding just two days prior to the date.
Crocker was a Harvard graduate who first came to Providence in 1802 to take a position at St. John’s Cathedral. He also maintained a position in Brown University’s Board Of Fellows, in which he proudly served alongside his ministry duties until his death in 1865. Crocker is buried at the North Burial Ground in Providence.
